Allemansrätten

The Swedish 'allemansrätt'.

In Sweden everyone is allowed to roam freely throughout the countryside. It is called 'everymans right', right of common or public access. This means that you can walk and camp, up to three nights in one spot (with certain restrictions). Pick berries , mushrooms, swim and boat on private land or water. Exceptions to this law should be carefully observed. They are:

Making fire is allowed only if there is no risk of the fire spreading; during drought fires may be generally prohibited.

Picking wild berries and flowers is allowed as long as they are not rare or endangered in which case they are protected by the law!

Destroying live trees, or any part of them is not allowed.

Taking birds eggs or nests is not allowed.

Fishing is only allowed if you have a pass or permit for the specific place where you plan to fish. This is usually sold by 'länsstyrelsen'.

You may enter enclosed areas, properly opening and closing gates, but this does not include the grounds around a private home, called the zone of privacy.

Finally a crucial responsibility that comes with this right is that you have to clean up after yourself! You must put all litter in a trash container, if available, Otherwise carry your litter with you.
